Retaining Wall Sydney: Greenwich Retaining Wall Transformation

Discover the Power of a Well-Designed Retaining Wall

A retaining wall is more than just a structural necessity; it is a versatile design element that can transform any outdoor space. Our recent project in Greenwich demonstrates the immense benefits of a well-executed retaining wall, showcasing how it supports and protects the landscape while enhancing the function and overall aesthetics of the area.

The Challenge: Retaining Wall Failure

In Greenwich, our client faced a significant issue with a failing retaining wall at the front of their property. The original wall, built to support 2.3 meters of earth on a steep slope, lacked proper engineering and reinforcements, leading to its collapse. With water and gas services intertwined with the structure, careful excavation was essential to avoid further complications.

Our Solution: Redesigning for Access and Aesthetics

We saw this challenge as an opportunity for a complete transformation. Instead of simply replacing the failed wall, we created a design that improved both the functionality and appearance of the space. The original access via steep stairs and a narrow driveway was redesigned to integrate new front stairs into the retaining wall, providing a safer and more welcoming entrance. This redesign allowed us to widen and regrade the driveway, enhancing both access and overall aesthetics.

Construction: Expert Engineering and Craftsmanship

We replaced the failing wall with an engineered, steel-reinforced, core-filled concrete block retaining wall. This robust solution provided unparalleled stability and increased usable space, enabling us to add a raised garden bed and expand the lawn area.

The Details: Robust Engineering

After demolition and excavation, we installed a 1800 x 300mm concrete footing, reinforced with steel mesh and bars. Steel upright bars connected the footing to the concrete block wall, preventing lateral movement. The wall was constructed using 8-inch hollow concrete blocks, with steel bars installed horizontally every second course. The wall was then core-filled with concrete, ensuring exceptional strength and durability. Effective drainage was ensured with geo-cloth, aggie line, and gravel behind the wall to prevent water buildup.

Finishing Touches: Elegant Sandstone

To complement the elegance of the home, we used exquisite sandstone from Gosford Quarries. The retaining wall, raised garden bed, and letterbox were finished with 40mm rockface sandstone cladding, while 50mm sawn sandstone was used for capping, stairs, footpath, and the house facade. This natural stone created a timeless statement, seamlessly blending with the landscape. Two large statement pots with mature weeping figs were installed beside the stairs, adding symmetry and complementing the black front door and house details.

The Result: A Stunning Transformation

From design to execution, this project was carried out with passion and expertise. The result is a beautiful, functional outdoor space that our client can enjoy for years to come.
